Yet Another Study Promotes Making Music for Brain Health in Seniors

Throw away those jellyfish pills — they don’t work! Do you know what actually works to promote brain health as you age? Music lessons.

There have been quite a few studies on this subject. Here’s another one to add to the pile: Researchers in Germany and Switzerland formed a group of 121 healthy adults between the ages of 62 and 78 who had fewer than six months of music lessons. Half the group took weekly 60-minute piano lessons and practiced daily for 30 minutes. The other half of the group did not receive lessons, but they were taught about music genres, instruments, and composers, and given homework to listen to music, kind of like taking a music appreciation class.

The group who learned to play the piano were found to have less degeneration in the part of the brain called the fornix, which is an area associated with memory, than the group who just passively listened to music.

Piano lessons are a fun way to improve your mental and physical health. Why not take one today and call me in the morning?
